"If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" ~Luke 11:13 The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Father and of the Son, who is God. In Matthew 10:20, Jesus tells His disciples that when they are brought before the courts, it will not be they who speak but the Spirit of their Father. The Apostle Paul in Galatians 4:6 tells us that God has given us the Spirit of His Son whereby we cry, "Abba, Father!"
The Holy Spirit is the very heart of God. Jesus said in this promise that His Father loves to bestow the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! When He pours out His Spirit on us, He is giving us all He has, because God’s Spirit is the very essence of who He is! Paul the Apostle, in Ephesians 5:18, teaches us that we are not to be drunk with wine but rather to be filled [controlled] with the Spirit! The context of this verse is that the filling of the Spirit is not a point in time but an ongoing process. We are called to be filled to overflowing with God’s Holy Spirit. So my encouragement for you today is to ask God to control you with His precious Spirit! Jesus says He’s a generous Father and loves to give us His Spirit when we ask. Prayer: Father, I ask for Your Holy Spirit to fill me again. Would You pour more of Your love through Your precious Holy Spirit into my heart today? I open my heart to You and expect to receive, for I am Your beloved child, and You delight to give me precious gifts. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen. "But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head." ~Psalm 3:3The Hebrew word for "shield" in this promise is a substance thick enough to be compared to the scaly hide of a crocodile. God is our defense and our shield. Nothing can penetrate His defenses. He is our glory, our God and Father. The Hebrew word for "glory" in this passage is ‘kabowd’ and it means a weighty honor He puts on us simply because we belong to Him.
When I think of the last part of this promise, I see a child before his father, with his head down in discouragement. The father doesn't want to discourage his child, so he lightly puts his finger on the little boy's chin and lifts his head until their eyes meet. It is our God and Father who lifts up our heads when we are downcast. He is the One who holds my head high. If today finds you disappointed, may you feel your Father's loving touch lifting your head so that your eyes may meet His loving gaze. Prayer: Responsive Thank You for being my invincible shield that protects me from harm, Father. Thank You for Your patience with me. When I forget this truth and become discouraged, You surround me with Your glory and gently lift my head high. Help me to trust in Your faithfulness Help me to trust in this promise today I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. "In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and His children shall have a place of refuge." ~Proverbs 14:26 The person who respects the Lord knows that God will be a safe place for them and a refuge for their children. God is our refuge and strength. His walls are impenetrable. We are safe and secure in the midst of His heart. This is good news for us but a promise for our children. This assurance is a promise we can count on in a world that feels like it's always on shaky ground.
For those of us with children (and grandchildren) this is a promise we can lay claim to for them as well! Even if your children are grown now and struggle with the pressures of this world just like everyone else, be encouraged to think that God is still their refuge no matter what challenges they face. May we all claim this promise today for ourselves and our loved ones! Prayer: Thank You, Father, for being a safe haven for my loved ones and me. In a terrifying world, I am grateful I can find rest in Your promise of being a fortress of security through any storm I may face. Today I choose to trust You to guard and keep me and my family with Your love. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen. "In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me." ~Psalm 56:11 The fear of man is a crippling, debilitating power in our world today. It keeps us from seizing opportunities and from being the people God created us to be. Fear of what others think or do keeps us imprisoned by their control. God wants us to be free; He doesn’t want us to live in fear.
The only way to deal with fear is to accept God’s love for us and let His perfect love cast out fear. (1 John 4:18) Trust is the secret. We can trust God because our God and Father always cares for us. In this promise, the psalmist declares that he will trust in God and not fear what man can do to him. Let faith arise in our hearts today as we agree with Romans 8:31, "If God be for us, who can be against us?” says the Apostle Paul. May we all continue to grow in the amazing freedom of God's children and not live in fear. Prayer: Thank You, Heavenly Father, for always being there for me, in every way. Help me to see the immeasurable power of Your boundless love today so that I do not fear any opposition that may come my way. The truth is that in Your protective love I can find rest and be kept safe from all the enemy’s attacks when he tries to convince me that I am on my own. If You are for me, no one can oppose me! In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen. "But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin." ~1 John 1:7 Jesus is called the Light of the World. There is no darkness in Him, but only light, glorious and bright. The good news of the gospel is that when we receive the free gift of God, the life of His own Son, we are thoroughly cleansed from all unrighteousness and forgiven of all our sins.
For we are now children of the light, fully united with our Savior Jesus Christ. Romans 8:1 tells us, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." The devil is our enemy, who is known as the accuser of the brethren. He wants to accuse us all the time so that we will be ashamed and hide from God. As you hear these accusing voices, declare the finished work of the blood of Jesus over your life, for it is the cleansing power of Jesus’ blood that keeps you walking in the light! We have nothing to hide from God in shame. Jesus Christ has purchased our place in the heart of His Father, and His blood has paid for our past sins, our present sins, and our future sins. You can rely on the finished work of Jesus Christ. He meant it when He cried out, "It is finished" on the cross. So can we continue to live a life of sin? Heaven forbid! But we can be assured that if we walk in the light as Jesus is in the light, His blood cleanses us from ALL sin. Prayer: Father, thank You that the shed blood of Jesus has cleansed me from all sin, past, present, and future. Help me believe this so I don’t spend my life fighting feelings of shame and condemnation today. Thank You for the truth that I am a child of light because I am joined eternally to Your beloved Son. In the name of Jesus, Amen. |
