“Therefore I [Paul] take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” 2 Corinthians 12.10
This verse contains God’s response to the Apostle Paul’s repeated requests for the removal of the excruciating “thorn in his flesh” that pained him. Paul’s reference to it as “a messenger from Satan sent to torment me” (see 2 Corinthians 12:7) indicates that it wasn’t just a minor discomfort. It was excruciatingly painful. It doesn’t really matter if it was physical or emotional because both can be agonizing and equally terrible.
Paul received a response from God that is reminiscent of a kind, caring, yet firm father. God knows when to say “no” to His children because He is the perfect father. He flawlessly juggles compassion and discipline in His infinite understanding. God, however, did not remain silent and spoke to Paul. His response caused Paul’s chin to slightly rise, allowing him to look up rather than at himself. God redirected Paul. ‘I am more than you need. I am enough. The less there is of your strength, the more there is of Mine’ (my paraphrase).
Take note of what transpires in Paul’s life following God’s response. Paul discovered how to take pleasure in adversity for Christ’s sake and because of His all-sufficient grace. Insufficiencies, slanders, persecutions, and challenges were viewed as opportunities for God’s power to be made perfect in him. In other words, where Paul was weakest in his life, God’s might was most clearly seen. We need to understand what Paul meant by “take pleasure.” He didn’t want to imply that he delighted in being mocked or subjected to injustice. In this verse, the word “take pleasure” means “to be content with.” Paul was able to find contentment in his challenging circumstances thanks to God's response.
Such a caring father! He loves us too much to spoil us. He is aware that if life were simple, our hearts would turn away from Him. He instead decides to give His children something more valuable than a life free from problems—He gives us Himself. We get His strength, grace, and peace. And that will endure forever, unlike the difficulties of this life.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I’m grateful for Your abundant grace. When life attempts to knock me down, You help me stand. Help me to suffer well for the sake of Jesus and for Your honor by keeping my eyes and heart firmly concentrated on Him. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
