“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” (Genesis 3:6)
Do you think God is good? I’m not referring to a mere mental affirmation of His goodness; rather, I mean a profound, deeply held conviction of His goodness. The question of God’s goodness is possibly one of the most important—yet often ignored—questions in all of Christianity. The child of God must believe all that comes from following Jesus is based on God’s goodness.
A doubt in God’s goodness was the main cause of Eve’s transgression in the garden. Not only did the snake attempt to get this first couple to doubt God’s command, but also doubt God’s intentions. Did God truly say . . . you won’t perish for sure? Satan gave a hiss. Eve was beyond dispute about what God had stated. Thus, the enemy assaulted the goodness of God. The serpent deceived Eve into doubting God’s wise design by questioning whether God was keeping something beneficial from them? Satan queried them if God intended to deprive rather than to protect?
Here are similar questions that remain at the core of the disobedient heart of sinful men to this day. Questions like: ‘Is it truly possible to put our trust in God?’ and, ‘Is He truly the wisest One?’ and, ‘Is there anything more desirable than what He desires?’ If we are not careful, these type of questions cause us to become easy prey for attacks from the wicked one when we turn our backs on Christ and allow our gazes to focus on the “forbidden fruit.”
Only one ruler may be present in our hearts. Jesus Christ created the location for that purpose. He deserves all the praise and recognition. In all that He does, He is trustworthy and faithful. There is no reason to distrust Him now or in the future. So keep God’s goodness in mind the next time your heart begins to wander. He is superior to all else and He is altogether good.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I apologize for ever questioning Your goodness. I am aware of the kindness You display, regardless of my challenges and hardships. I choose to put You first today.
