God's Good Pleasure

“Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things He hath done for you.” 1 Samuel 12:24

Serving those in need is one of the most powerful ways to experience Christ’s joy. Nothing gets your mind off your own issues faster than helping others. The reality is that no matter how terrible things get, there is always someone worse off than you. Trials and tribulations can leave us exhausted, dejected, weary, and even angry. During these moments, serving others may be the last thing on our minds, but it may be the best time to do it.

Our incentive for serving others is not to feel better about ourselves. Instead, Christ and His glory should be the only things driving us. When we consider Jesus and all He endured, suffered, and joyfully gave up, we are compelled to partake in His sufferings, even if in a tiny degree. At the foot of the cross, there is no room for self. In front of the empty grave, there is no room for self-pity. Jesus breathed His final breath while loving and giving to others. He entrusted His mother to a dear friend. He extended forgiveness to His adversaries. He granted the thief forgiveness. He sacrificed His Spirit for our salvation.

How can we deny ourselves such a great Savior? How can we allow passing events to overshadow the eternal gift He has given us? It is never too late to share Christ’s love with others. He will use us as long as we are willing to be used. Some of your most effective service on this planet may occur when others witness your perseverance in the face of adversity. You may never realize the impact your life has had on people who observe you.

So, let us reflect on the wonderful things God has done for us. May we always be ready and eager to reach out to those who are unaware of our benevolent Father. Nothing pleases Him more than a broken, tattered, and surrendered heart.

Prayer: Father, You have done more for me than I could have anticipated or asked for. Your goodness and mercy are all I need to give up my life for Your sake. When I am going through a difficult moment, I admit that I often turn inside, oblivious to the work You are doing all around me. Lord, please assist me to see the needs around me. Use me to express Your love to those who are in need right now. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
